About the Diabetes Essentials Course

Diabetes Essentials is a comprehensive learning program which covers all aspects of diabetes from diagnosis to management. The online interactive course will provide you with the latest best practice information on diabetes including the pathophysiology of diabetes, diabetes management principles, and prevention of complications.

This course has been endorsed for 12 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA)

CPD Course Structure

The Diabetes Essentials online course has 4 modules, with chapters and scenarios throughout. There are 4 Assessments, one multiple choice assessment at the end of each module.
The course and assessments will take approximately 12 hours in total to complete. You can do the course at your own pace.

eLearning Modules

  1. Diabetes basics

    6 Chapters which cover: Before diabetes, Understanding diabetes, How diabetes is diagnosed, Managing diabetes, Pregnancy and diabetes, Meaningful monitoring. 3 hours to complete.

  2. Living with Diabetes

    8 Chapters which cover: Lifestyle – nutrition, Lifestyle – physical activity, Medication used to manage diabetes, Understanding hypoglycaemia, Understanding hyperglycaemia, Sick days and surgery, Travel, Diabetes’ impact on life. 4 hours to complete

  3. Screening for complications

    3 Chapters which cover: Screening for complications, Microvascular complications, Macrovascular complications. 1.5 hours to complete.

  4. Conditions related to diabetes

    2 Chapters which cover: Metabolic syndrome, PCOS. 1 hours to complete.

Assessment

The Diabetes Essentials online course has 4 modules. There are 4 multiple choice assessments, one at the end of each module. Once you pass all the assessments you can download your certificate of completion.

Delivery Mode

Students have the flexibility to study in their own time and location. The course can be accessed through the Diabetes Qualified Learning Management System. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop with the Chrome website browser. Course completion requires approximately 12 hours of eLearning.

Certificate

On completion of the course and by passing the assessments. You will instantly receive a certificate in the learning management system for 12 hours of eLearning accredited for 12 CPD points from ADEA.

How do i become a Credentialed Diabetes Educator (CDE)?

To become a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) you need to complete a Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Management and complete hours in practicing diabetes education.

How long do I have access to the course?

12 Months. The time is calculated from when a student is enrolled into the online program. Friendly email reminders will be sent to students to ensure the course is completed within the time period. If you need an extension due to exceptional circumstances please email us.

How do I get my CPD certificate of completion?

Once you have completed this online CPD course and passed the 4 multiple choice assessments, a ‘certificate of completion’ becomes available for download from the learning management system. You will receive a certificate with 11 points from ESSA and 10 Fitness Australia CEC’s.

It is a COMPLUSORY PRE-REQUISITE that you have completed the initial face to face program before completing this Refresher program, otherwise you are not eligible to become a BEAT IT Trainer. BEAT IT Trainer Refresher includes six modules which have been developed by Accredited Exercise Physiologists, Accredited Practising Dietitians and Credentialled Diabetes Educators. The content covers chronic disease in Australia, the physical activity guidelines, diabetes, acute & chronic complications, exercise considerations and recommendations, and nutrition for physical activity.

In addition to refreshing BEAT IT Trainers with how to run a successful BEAT IT program, with the program now includes the added bonuses of advertising and ongoing support. A mark of greater than 80% in required in order to successfully complete the program requirements.

Prior to registering into the online course, it is your responsibly to ensure you have a current CPR certificate and have completed the BEAT IT Trainer face to face program.
